- March 26th 2:00 PM will be our FINAL DRESS REHEARSAL/ ELEMENTARY PERFORMANCE
Every student has a role to play and needs to know their songs, speaking parts, dance steps, motions, and entrances very well. We will have only a few rehearsals on the stage next week to put the show together, so it is essential that individuals know all of their own parts. Maybe you could ask your child about his or her part in the show… and help them to be sure they are prepared? Fifth graders are always invited to practice ‘extra’ with Mrs. Corbin during every lunch recess until the show.
MARCH 26th 7:00 PM Performance
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Corbin [email protected]
- If you have volunteered to bring refreshments for after the show, please contact Katherine Branch [email protected] to find out what to bring and where to bring it.
- The performance will be video-recorded. DVD’s will be just $10, and order forms will be available at the show.
- SCRIP will be available for purchase before Wednesday night’s performance, so bring your cash or checkbook to support NM Music Boosters while you shop!
- Seats will be limited, and there will be no seat saving (as always), so arrive early for a good spot! (Overflow seating will NOT be available for this performance. Due to fire codes, we will have to limit audience members to a strict maximum of available seats in the FLEX.
- If you are borrowing a costume from one of our parent volunteers or from the School Music Department, your costume should be returned after the show (Before you go home!) into its bag or hanger WITH YOUR NAME ON IT in Mrs. Corbin’s room.
Costume Info: Though the school music department (and a few parent volunteers) may be able, in some cases, to provide a few costume accessories, all students will need to gather/ make/ borrow/ purchase their own costume for our show: Wednesday, March 26.
There are many colonial/ explorer costumes available for purchase online. A simple google search will give you lots of options (even on Amazon.com). But, most students will probably opt to make their own, just by gathering and using things they already have! A very inexpensive trip to Goodwill or Hope’s Outlet could be all you need to find the perfect costume.
On the back of this note, there are some specific ideas and pictures to help guide your costume gathering. If you have questions along the way, feel free to email our costume committee. We have a great team of parents who are available to help students that need assistance. They will also help to coordinate some of the group costumes (i.e. Union & Confederate soldiers) and to help to make sure the main characters are well-dressed. If you need help with your child’s costume, please contact Andrea Mount by email [email protected] on or before Wednesday, March 12. Or call Angela Corbin 231-719-4149, if email is not available to you. If we do not hear from you by March 12, we will assume that you will supply your child’s full costume on your own.
Most characters in our program represent real people that have impacted our nation’s history. You may want to take some time to look up images or descriptions of your character (or the time in which they lived) to help inspire your costume design. You might even learn something interesting during your search.
A few ideas for 'Colonial Costumes'...For Male Characters:
Start with a plain white dress shirt or a woman’s blouse.
+ Dark plain pants…gathered up into tall socks... or even cut short and tucked into socks. (Solid colored baseball pants work really well!!)
+ accessories: suspenders or vest or jacket, a colonial style hat (or even a raccoon skin hat, if appropriate for your character). For certain characters, a white wig would be a pretty great touch! Plain dress shoes or dark shoes (you could even make your own big buckle out of tinfoil) or maybe borrow some tall boots from a mom or sister?
For Female Characters:
A plain long dress or shirt and a long skirt + accessories: apron and/or shawl, a bonnet or hat.
You could even carry a prop (a basket with bread or fruit). You could use google to look up images of colonial costumes or early American dresses or 1800’s images. Some characters are Puritans or Quakers, others are pioneers. Depending on your character, you might like to use Little House on the Prairie or the American Girl books/movies for inspiration. Some characters might even choose a more ‘wealthy’ colonial lady look and wear a dress like the picture on the far right below.
A few Native American costume ideas...
Simply by wearing plain, earth tones with a few extra pieces can make a simple costume come together….some fringed boots or leather sandals or moccasins… a hand-made headpiece…a piece of leather tied around a head with braided hair. An old shirt or tunic, cut in a fringe on the edges…. Beaded jewelry, feathers, or woven ponchos would be great.
Costumes for Immigrants from other lands...
The country choice is up to you. Many students already have clothing from another country. Just choose a country that is easiest for you to find clothing for!
I am unable to upload sound files to this website. But you can use the videos below to practice a few of our songs...
If you would like your own practice CD, just bring a blank CD or $2 to school and turn it in to Mrs. Corbin with a CD Form (available in the Music Room).
I think our show will look a bit different from these interpretations, but these students worked hard to put on some great shows. They might even give you some costume ideas...
